The violence in the British capital city seems to be escalating and rioters and looters have set their sights on local betting shops as their next target for random acts of violence that seem to express a deep frustration with social inequality and economic struggles that have plagued the British economy since the sub-prime crisis of 2008.
One of the companies that seem to be affected by the riots is Ladbrokes with several of its betting shops in different London neighborhoods getting hit.
The riots started on Saturday night after the fatal shooting of Mark Duggan by London police on Thursday evening. The father of four who was only 29-years-old was shot while the police attempted to execute an arrest in Tottenham, London. The police claim they were met with fire and responded accordingly, while Mr. Duggan’s family and friends claim he was the victim of police brutality.
Mr. Duggan’s family held a quiet protest on Saturday evening opposite the Tottenham police station. Somehow the protest descended into complete chaos and a local riot erupted on the streets of Tottenham. The police was caught completely off-guard and have not been able to contain the situation since.
Over the past couple of days the violence spread to other London neighborhoods and seems to hit mainly impoverished areas that are ethnically mixed. Many betting shops and sporting goods shops have been hit and Ladbrokes shops, which can be found in every neighborhood in Britain, have been broken into and vandalized.
