The History of Scratch Cards

Scratch cards originate from the US and initially only manual randomization methods were used to produce them. In 1974 an American company called Scientific Games Corp. has produced a computer generated instant lottery scratch card, however it was Astro-Med Inc. company that received the US patent in 1987 for scratch off tickets.

The cards were usually made of soft cardboard and usually was covered with latex which prevented from seeing what is printed on the card but allowed for the latex to be scratched off using a coin or a fingernail.

The original scratch cards required players to match three identical symbols that had the same prize amount noted on them. A player who got a ticket with such matching symbols and monetary values would be a winner and win the amount that was noted on the card.

Later scratch cards adopted other popular games such as monopoly and poker and other popular themes such as motorbikes, popular sports, comics, etc.

The scratch cards were known by many names, depending on where you were, you might hear people refer to them as scratch tickets, scratcher, scratch it, scratch off, scratch and win, instant lottery or instant game , and some simply referred to them as scratchies.

Playing scratch cards became an instant success due to their relatively low cost and the chance to win instant prizes although in many countries the top prizes are only paid in installments over the course of several years.

With the rapid takeover of the internet in providing new services many state lotteries and private operators have started to utilize Flash and Java technology to offer more sophisticated online scratch off cards using advanced graphics and audio feature and providing a far more rewarding experience to players.
