Worries over Scratch Card Mail Fraud

Mr. Nathan Deggett a resident of Prescott, Canada checked his home mailbox as he does every single day and discovered a scratch card with the rest of his mail.

The "Bingo Scratch and Win" card was full of promises of free cash prizes, cars and other merchandise to fast-acting recipients who will call the number mentioned on the card within 72 hours of receiving the scratch card in the post.

Nathan Doggett picked up his phone and rang the number listed on the scratch card. The person on the other side of the phone asked Mr. Doggett a series of questions including whether he was a homeowner or a renter.

The person on the other side of the phone insisted that said information was crucial for qualifying for the contest. This triggered Mr. Doggett suspicions and he called the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, formally called Phonebusters due to their focus in fighting telephone fraud.

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre advised Mr. Doggett to be cautious as the scratch card is considered suspect and the company promotion it is operating in a gray area.

Under the law it is not technically considered to be a scam, but it is not what it appears to be and it actually uses an old trick where it promises a chance to win rather than guarantee a win.

The details they collect for innocent people who phone in trying to claim their prize are then used by the company that sends sales reps to the person's home in an attempt to demonstrate and sell them a product.

These companies then use pushy sales tactics that tend to work best with the more vulnerable members of the population such as senior citizens.

People need to remember that promises of something for nothing rarely come true and that lottery-based games tend to cost money before they are given the chance to win anything.
